Getting Started with Internet Radio

So you've had a good look around and a listen to the offerings available in the Internet Radio Community and have decided that you would like to start your own Internet Radio Station.

At great risk of creating another monster/competitor/opponent we have decided to give you a helping hand anyway, because thats the kind of people we are.

Firstly you will have to shop around and find yourself a reliable and tech savvy stream server facility.  To get started on that just go and Google 'stream servers'. Because there are so many to choose from I am not about to start listing them here.  Besides I can't fully spoon feed you, that would take all the fun out of it now. Wouldn't it?

Next you will need a web server where you can put up your banners and provide information and links to the stream and play lists and any other info that you wish to impart to your prospective audience.  Talking of which, you will have to decide early on about what format your stream is going to follow, whether you will cater for a niche market and specialise on one genre, or if you are going to go full on commercial.  Or, if you want to give everybody a go, and play an all genre format.  It's a good idea to get that decision out of the way right from the outset.

Oh! It's also a good idea to have yourself a name, ('der) one that is possibly catchy and easily remembered and reflects an image that you wish to portray.  Something like Lizard Lounge Radio is quite good but that's already been taken.  Sorry about that.

So, once you've got your stream server and web server and format sorted and your name branded banners,  you are going to need some extra software and programs to help get your sound out and your message across to a potential listening audience.  I have listed a few helpful links for you to peruse at the conclusion of this rant.

For an Indie Style Presence

On your website you can place your ads requesting people to submit their music for airplay and setup an upload facility for them to instantly send their MP3 format material, which, by the way MP3 is one of the best ways to go for your content because the file size is small and compact and you will be able to upload more tracks to your stream storage facility.  A number of different formats are available for streaming audio but we use and recommend MP3 because of it's compact and 'loss-less' construct.  You may also provide a postal address or box for people to send cd's and promo material, photos etc which you can utilise and use on your website for further content about who is being played on your radio.

You can have a member driven site where you can have on offer all manner of items for sale and advertising affiliates to generate an income to assist paying for everything that you have put into place,  but I recommend keeping all that to a minimum or you will get bogged down with updating  your website and refreshing all the info that needs to be updated.   You will also have the job of checking all the material that has been submitted, ensuring that it's the right format and audible and is actually, errr......music.

A comfortable streaming file would come in at something like: MP3 format 128Kbps @ 44100Khz.
If your files have a lower Kbps (kilo-bits per second) rate, you will experience a drop in the broadcast quality, though these lower bit streams are audibly acceptable, we don't recommend any less than 128Kbps.  If the files are recorded at a higher bit rate, the quality will be good because of the dynamic range of the frequencies, but, the file size will be a lot larger also and consume vast amounts of your all valuable stream storage space.  So set your standard and streaming rates early on also and adhere to a consistent format throughout your entire play lists and systems.

For a Commercial Style Format

All of the above applies but you will also have to negotiate with performance rights societies such as ASCAP, BMI, APRA etc etc....  These are the organisations that collect the royalties  for the artists who have their material  presented on public broadcast facilities, tv, radio etc.

These royalties take on a number of  forms such as, performances royalties, writers royalties, licensing for compilation cd releases, advertising sound tracks, film sound tracks, and the list goes on and on.  A virtual minefield that will have to be negotiated if you intend to broadcast commercial content.

There are a number of helpful websites where you can obtain more information about the entire process and I have provided links to some such sites to get you started and more acquainted with what you need and should know.

So thats about it.  If you still want to become the next big thing in Internet radio I wish you all the best of luck and please feel free to drop me an email and let me know where on the net I can find you or, if you just want some more information, or just a friendly chat, feel free to contact me also.

Until then, happy listening.
